Na última edição da revista Metal Edge, escritores Adrien Begrand, Brett Callwood, Leonard Pierce, Bryan Reesman e Jeff Treppel (com uma nota do editor Phil Freeman) assumiram a tarefa de realizar a extensa lista do top 50 maiores front-men do metal. Conta também com um top 25, que lista alguns dos melhores.
Discordando desta escolha, o Director Sênior da Roadrunner Records Mike Gitter, o Director de Publicidade Sciarretto Amy, Justin D'Angelo coordenador de Tour e o editor Sam Roon decidiram sentar-se e elaborar o que eles acham que é uma mais rigorosa lista dos 50 principais front-man no metal. A equipa teve especial liberdade para esta tarefa. Nas muitas horas de discussão, eles recordaram-se de várias pessoas que tinham mais potencialidades de front-man do que o vocalista. Isso foi levado em consideração e os verdadeiros front-man do metal estão listados aqui.
A equipa propositadamente deixou de fora desta lista todos os artistas da Roadrunner Records.
